While still employed by the city, I worked with the Hotsinpiller 5-K from its inception. Following retirement, in 2018, I was able to become more involved accepting other duties. In the past five years, I have been assisting with fundraising.
Following eight years of employment in Parks and Recreation field in the Kanawha Valley, I gratefully took the position of Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Bridgeport. I remained in this position from 1987 until my retirement in 2018. I am married to Kym Burton and we have two children. My wife retired from teaching in June of 2023, and currently substitutes in Harrison County. Our son, Grant and daughter Sarah, both graduated from Bridgeport High School. Grant and Derek were friends throughout their school years, as well as being fellow teammates, playing basketball for Bridgeport Middle School and Bridgeport High School. Both Grant and Sarah enjoy participating in the race. Grant has also served on the Scholarship Committee.
First and foremost, the race is an excellent way to recognize Jim and Derek’s strong dedication to Law Enforcement, which is a testament to what remarkable men they were. The foundation serves as an avenue for students seeking a career in law enforcement, easing the burden of cost through scholarships. The foundation/race is another way that the citizens of Bridgeport continue to come together for a worthy cause.
